.hack franchise it not the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to sadness. However, despite its bright pastelle colors and inventive design, there is a feel of underlying sadness. They escape cruel real world in the beautiful fictional world of the game, but still cannot completely forget about that other ugly world out there.
This soundtrack combines within it a dreamy utopian feel with utter sadness. At times it is like a magical faraway land where everyone is happy, and no bad things could possibly happen. At others a realization, that this utopian land but a work of fiction and is not real.
The ending reflects sadness that real world is far from ideal world we desire. As well as vague hope to find that ideal world somehow. The search for the key of twilight is like a search for a way to open some magical door to a better world.
The opening instead reflects insatiable desire for that better, perfect world, that some fiction can satisfy.
