Back in Russia I liked to watch this game.
Its literal translation would be simply "What? Where? When?" that hardly explains anything.
However, you can think of it as an anti-trivia game.
A team of 6 highly erudite individuals take on tough question, sent in by the audience. The envelops with questions are placed on the table and a spinner is used to pick the question. Zero means that host will join the table and ask his own question instead. That is one of the rare options to see the person who narrates everything in this game.
Team gets one minute to discuss the question. If they answer correctly the score and if not the audience scores. Whoever scores 6 first wins.
Questions vary from 'what was the purpose of elbow statue in the Czech city of Brno' to the 'length of Champs Elysee', to the 'what that strange contraption was used for?' (they show the actual thing to the team and viewers).
The game is a late-night show. Perhaps because earlier time slots are taken by shows that appeal to larger audience, pushing this game to late night. Perhaps because players are all owls and not larks. Owl is a symbol of the show. The best player of the year gets the crystal owl statuette.
That said, aesthetics and style of this game is very cool. Mostly black with gold baroque decorations. Some mirrors and glass.
Music is also exceptional and adds to the feel of the game really well. A lot of jazz, but also some modern rearrangement of classical pieces and few modern pop.
The fact that most players have huge glasses further show how much of a nerd one has to be to play something like that. That is like heavy nerd boxing, where only nerdiest of nerd can survive.
Possibly because of this game I like black and gold aesthetics. I am myself very much on intellectual rather than sports side. Erudition is my strong point.
