However, I never quite managed to pin down any particular reason for me not liking it. I often liked to blame it on poor story and writing.
However, I suddenly got it:
Characters in anime of the 2000s were generally very good-natured people. Surely there were villains, they may have evil intentions and may have killed a lot of people. However, they were not the kind of street thugs who just beat people for no reason at all.
Even anime that references and builds identity of some of its characters based on suffering from such abuse, actually fell short of downright showcasing thug galore non-stop. They kept it to minimum.
In contrast in 2010s anime thugs, thuggish-ness and other ugly things are part of normal everyday experience. This really grinds my gears.
In fact, all possible interactions got much tougher and harder compared to how they were back in 2000s. There are no more adorable naive cute moeblobs like in K-On! who carelessly having fun.
I absolutely hate thugs and thuggish-ness both in anime and in real life.
Because of that I cling and keep rewatching anime of the 2000s when characters seem to care more about my feelings, and everything was nice and friendly.
Life too became more thuggish since that time, and I absolutely hate it.
