Jigoku Shoujo Review (Enhanced and expanded in 2025)

Overall Rating 8.7 out of 10 - anime that gives victims of abuse and bulling on screen justice

I recommend watching. It is one-of-a-kind show.

"We will take revenge on your behalf."

Not everyone is lucky enough to be surrounded by friendly and supportive people. Some are unlucky to be saddled with abusive monsters instead. You want to make them stop. However, if they are too powerful for you to take on them or out of reach, then there is nothing you can do to end your suffering.

If you suffered from abuse and bulling, hate your abusers and want revenge, then this show is for you. You will not only find it relatable but will find happiness and solace in it. Enma Ai will take revenge on your and other people's behalf.

This is mostly episodic show. Each episode features one person who is bullied, abused, harassed, oppressed or blackmailed by someone. In the end the only salvation they could find is contacting Jigoku Shoujou and ask her for help.

One of the rules of Enma Ai's contract is that a person who made a pact will go to hell after their death. For most of the victims that is still a relief as their abusers make their lives worse than hell and getting out if this hell even briefly is still a relief. Many of the victims, whom Enma Ai helped, especially in the first season, saw her as a savior.

I can fully understand that sentiment. I can also understand a desire for revenge, people who caused me harm, deserve to suffer in return.

Unlike most other fans, I think first season is the best. First season takes on the matters with utmost seriousness. First it shows just how bad humans can be and makes sure very person Enma Ai sends to hell certainly deserves it. Then it executes justice in a somber and dignified manner. It is the most somber and true to the core values of the show.

First season consistently portrays everyone who was sent to hell as clear and irredeemable monster who certainly deserved it. Second season takes a little easier and makes it a much lighter form of entertainment, but it cheapens the nuclear option of sending someone to hell. Finally, 3rd season throws all sense in the window and shows people using Jigoku Tsushin on a whim.

Some of the episodes are especially touching, like the one where Enma Ai portrait wept.

In the last 3 episodes (24 - 26) we also get a back story of Enma Ai herself and how she became a Jigoku Shoujou. People of her village decided to sacrifice her to their crazy god to get a good harvest. Break one innocent life for the benefit of the perpetrators. Enma Ai eventually got her revenge against villages who killed her. This helps you better understand her, and people like her. I personally find her sentiment and hatred towards villagers very understandable and relatable. I will not accept being sacrificed for someone else benefit or wellbeing.

This is an anime that can give solace to victims of abuse and bulling. May your revenge against your abusers be granted. Unless it is against me of course. I can never be in the wrong, if you think I am wrong, they you will be send to hell.
