Puni Puni☆Poemii Review

Overall Rating 7.0 out of 10

I recommend watching for all fans of comedy, also it's a well-made deconstruction of magical girl genre

Puni Puni Poemi is standalone spinoff of Excel Saga. It has the same director, same overall style of humor and a few recurring characters like Nabeshin. On the other hand, it has new main character and plot.

Compare to Excel Saga insanity went all the way to the new heights with both jokes and satire. This show broadly parodies magical girl genre, sexualisation of anime heroines and even tentacle sex in hentai. It also touches on topics of BDSM and how anime in general subtly caters to our love of tied up women. Its rather explicit in what it shows.

Overall, it is a very fun show, that fans of Excel Saga can enjoy. Fans of Gintama and Nichijou as well.

As far as I remember you do not need to watch Excel Saga to understand what is going on. However, it is probably best if you do watch it first as this show is an encore version of Excel Saga.

Finally, to those who wonder what a deconstruction of a genre is, this shows almost a golden standard for deconstruction. It deconstructs magical girl genre really well. Not something I can say about Madoka Magica for example, Madoka Magica is a very well written tragedy with magical girls in it. I can certainly recommend Madoka Magica for fans of good tragedy. However, a deconstruction of a genre Madoka Magica is not and I have to point it out. If you want to know what a deconstruction is, watch Di Gi Charat, it deconstructs the entire anime industry.

Overall, I can recommend it to all fans of comedy as well as to people interested in history of anime.
